Flat diapers are made from cotton gauze material and are single layered. The PUL covers are manufactured from a quality polyester fabric which has a thin coating of waterproof application. Instructions on diaper folding for prefold diapers

Newspaper Fold: This type of fold offers multiple front layers to absorb the wetness and is very effective for baby boys. The fold is little bulky and is best suited for babies who have thin to average thighs.

Start with a flat diaper and keep the baby in such a way that the diaper's back edge is at the naval level. The front edge must be folded up in such a way that it fits conveniently below the naval level. The size of the baby and the diaper determines the size of this fold. Now starting on one side of the diaper, you must fold over an edge till it meets at the diaper's center. Repeat the procedure for the other side and position the edge into pocket or space which is formed by the fold of the first side.

Then the diaper must be pulled up between the thighs securely to the diaper's back wings. If you are using pins then one back corner must be pulled at a time and must be laid over the front section and attached. In order to ensure a secure fit, the pins should go through slightly below the top. If snappi device is used, both the back corners must be held over hooking and the diaper front one side at a time, before you attach the third hook at the center of the diaper's front section.

Bikini Twist Fold: This fold can be quickly donned and is very simple. This type of fold is perfect for babies who have thick thighs, especially for baby girls because the twisted area provides extra thickness. This particular fold is popular for its ability to contain messy bowel movements, though some people find the clean up can be a bit difficult because of the twisted section.

Place the baby as you did with the newspaper fold. The front half of the diaper must be twisted and each corner of the diaper must be brought to the opposite side to attain this preferably 180 degrees. The front of the diaper must be brought between the thighs and the front edge must be folded down till it is below the naval level. Lastly, both the corners must be brought over the diaper front and each of the sides must be fastened with a snappi or pins.

What do you need to diaper a newborn?

There are many choices in modern cloth these days. Some moms prefer one type, some prefer another. No matter what type you prefer, I recommend 2 dozen diapers to get you through 2 days without washing. When you are dealing with a newborn, doing a wash load every other day is more manageable than trying to do them daily. I would start a load washing before feeding my baby, then after changing her and settling her to sleep, I'd put them in the dryer and then take a nap myself. That way, the diapers got clean and I got plenty of rest.

I suggest the following cloth diaper layette for new parents:

2 dozen diapers
4-6 covers if you are using diapers that need a cover
20-30 cloth wipes
1 wet bag (for diaper bag)
2 pail liners (so one can be in the wash while you are using the other one)
1 large wet bag to keep near the bassinet for midnight diaper changes
6 colored prefold diapers to use for burp cloths (colors make it easy to keep them separate from real diapers)

If you are using prefolds or flats, I recommend adding a few pins or a Snappi for fastening, but if you are using a snug fitting wrap-style cover you don't need any fasteners to keep the diaper on.

That's it! Just prewash the diapers according to the manufacturer's directions, stack them near the changing table, and you are ready for baby's arrival. If the baby comes before you have everything else ready, you will still be fine. A baby won't even notice if the nursery is painted before they arrive - but having diapers is a necessity!
